Lili Phung (b.1977)

Biography

Lilly Phung's paintings are immediately nostalgic and dark. Much of the imagery within her work draws upon 60s American advertising with scenes of domestic bliss hiding behind layers of gesturally applied paint and surface-based text. Indeed much of the language within the work ("honeymoon" / "party") adds to this interplay between a longed- for past and a cynical, confused present.

Texturally Phung's canvasses are heavily worked, going through many stages of development. It is this layering of components, time and mood that further enhances the delicate relationship between what's been left behind and what lies ahead. Whilst the imagery itself draws heavily on American Pop culture so too do we see homages to Warhol or moments of a painterly Rauschenberg. Yet equally we see references to German developments whilst the more revered figures of Polke and Basquiat also loom large. With humour, emotion and an assured formal awareness Lilly Phung's paintings lie between an acknowledged past (artistically and conceptually) and an unsure present. Lilly Phung lives and works in Paris.
